I was able to negotiate a lower payoff with the bank. They wanted $50k to bring the loan current but were willing to accept $36k to stop the foreclosure and pay the balance over the next year or so. I managed to raise the money as a private loan by pooling together the funds from three friends. It will be paid back in a year from the equity in the house as we will be downsizing when my daughter finishes high school in June. It is a relief to know the crisis has been averted.
